A power outage destroyed production facilities in the Canadian province of Ontario on December 27, 2009, and has left the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's (CBC's) entire television series archive inaccessible. The loss of the archive is a major blow to the entertainment industry in Canada, as the archive contains programming from some of CBC's most popular series, such as This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Little Mosque on the Prairie, and Little Bear.
This Hour Has 22 Minutes ran from 1977 to 1995 and was hosted by Rick Mercer. The show satirized politics and Canadian culture and was known for its irreverence and black humour.
Little Mosque on the Prairie ran for five seasons from 1999 to 2005. This show was about a modern-day Muslim family living in the fictitious town of Sacred Heart, Saskatchewan. The series was nominated for eight Gemini Awards.
Little Bear, which ran for four seasons from 1996 to 2000, tells the story of a mischievous bear who moves to the Alberta wilderness with his family.
CBC is asking the public to help replace lost files by entering its digitized files into a new online database, called "CBC Preservation", under a voluntary agreement.
Losing the archive will cost CBC millions of dollars in lost revenues, according to a statement released in the wake of the crash. The province has committed $6 million to subsidize the lost programming.
"The loss of these programs will make it difficult for new CBC shows to find a successful audience," said Gary Rodin, executive vice-president of the CBC. "It will also make it more difficult for existing programs to find new homes, and there could be a price to pay in terms of CBC audience share."
The CBC is offering no compensation for past or future lost revenues from CBC content, the company said.
The archive contains more than 10,000 hours of television programming, including 5,000 hours of existing shows that were scheduled to air on CBC's English-language networks on December 27.
The rest of the lost programming is expected to include about 3,500 hours of archived content from other CBC stations, including Radio-Canada.
