In 1755, the British King George II decided to merge the Grand Duchy of Berg, the Bishopric of Hildesheim, the County of Veldenstein and the counties of
Maintz and Hirsche as the Grand Duchy of Hanover. In 1803, this territory was joined to the Kingdom of Westphalia in 1807, including the royal domain of Bremen and the County of Bentheim.
In 1866, the two administrations were merged again, becoming the Prussian Province of Hanover.
At the time of the Napoleonic Wars, King George III commissioned Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin to modernize a large house at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, which had been built in 1819 for King George IV. To create an East Wing, an entirely new set of rooms was built for Queen Adelaide. This work was completed in 1845–47 and is now known as the Grand Reception Room.
Modern history
German reunification
The last time Hanover was part of the Kingdom of Prussia was in 1866 after Prussia had achieved its second unification by merging with the Northern German states of the Confederation of the Rhine.
The province was, during the last years of the Second World War, the part of Germany occupied by the Allies; it became part of the British occupation zone.
The Hanoverian legislative elections, held in 1946, gave the Conservatives a clear majority. The first freely elected Hanoverian Parliament took place on 29 May 1946.
Federal Germany
The state's constitutional position is unclear after the dissolution of the Second German Empire. The sovereignty of the state is not defined in the Basic Law and has not been determined by the Basic Law, the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany (Grundgesetz) or any other legal instrument.
In 1959, the state became part of the Federal Republic of Germany. The integration into the Federal Republic has been a matter of friction between Hanoverians and other members of the German Confederation, who feared that Hanover, especially after its move to the North German Confederation (1815–45), would undermine the integrity of the German Confederation.
Following the Volkszählung of 1953, in which a large proportion of the state's population declared their intention to remain in the German Democratic Republic, the British authorities refused to recognize any of the state's elections.
